Course Summary:

“Commodity Forecasting with EViews” is a 3-day course designed to introduce participants to a wide range of time-series models regularly used to analyze commodities. Real world data sets are used throughout the hands-on course to reinforce the methods introduced. The EViews statistical package will be used exclusively. This is one of the most widely used and user-friendly packages available

Various commodity data sets will be used throughout the course. Participants will learn how to analyze supply and demand relationships, develop price-forecasting models, investigate relationships between commodities and the broader macroeconomy, and analyze spot and futures markets. The course is designed for industry analysts and economists, investment professionals, and public-sector analysts.

Day 1 Topics:

"EViews Bootcamp" introduces participants to the EViews interface. The morning session is devoted to ensuring participants can navigate EViews, import data from various sources, create graphs and tables that can be exported to external documents, and produce summary statistics from EViews data. The afternoon session dives deeper into data analysis covering the basics of analyzing commodity data. Topics covered include: data transformations, summary statistics, hypothesis tests, and how to perform regressions in EViews.

Day 2 Topics:

Day 2 focuses on time series analysis and introduces participants to univariate modeling and forecasting. Univariate analysis is the building block of all commodity modeling. Topics include: how to work with trending data, non-stationarity, unit roots, estimating ARIMA models, building and evaluating forecasting models, best practices around forecasting, and principal component analysis.

Day 3 Topics:

Day 3 introduces participants to multivariate modeling in EViews. Topics include: auto-regressive distributed lag models, solving systems of equations, vector auto-regressions, co-integration, and error correction models. The multivariate techniques covered are the most widely used time-series models to analyze commodity markets and develop forecasting models.

REQUIRED EQUIPMENT:

Participants are expected to bring their own laptops equipped with EViews and Excel. All other course materials will be provided. A 30-day demo copy can be requested directly from EViews. 

CANCELLATION POLICY:

Cancellations received prior to five full business days before the date of the seminar will be honored. For cancellations received after the five day deadline but before the date of the seminar, the full fee less $200 will be converted to a transferable, nonrefundable credit to be applied toward a future seminar. Any credits issued must be used within one year. If notification of cancellation is not received prior to the first day of the seminar, the full fee is payable. Colleague substitution permitted with no penalty.
